Magic: Legends open beta recently dropped on the Epic Game Store as a free-to-play ARPG that takes place in the Magic the Gathering universe.

Gameplay, Story, and Mechanics

Starting with the story and voice acting, it’s really nothing incredible. The voice acting especially is incredibly cheesy. I can’t exactly tell if that’s just the direction they went for the story, or if they just didn’t give a damn how it sounded.

The story is rather uninteresting for me thus far as well. Although, I would imagine that most people won’t be too interested in the story, as much as seeing their favorite characters and creatures come to life from the card game.

The gameplay is where the game shines. It’s an ARPG that plays very smoothly. I was playing with a gamepad and had no issues keeping a good flow of spells going. My biggest gripe with the mechanics is definitely the deck system for spells though. You shuffle through what spells you can cast based on how your deck of spells is composed. I know this is incredibly fitting for the MTG universe, but it wasn’t something I enjoyed.

Visually, the game is nothing revolutionary, but still I feel the art-style is nice and paints the Magic the Gathering universe well.

Wrapping Up

My initial thoughts on Magic: Legends certainly have me worried about the overwhelming amount of microtransactions in the store. I hope the game doesn’t focus too much on trying to milk as much money as it can from die-hard Magic the Gathering fans. With that being said, the general gameplay is pretty smooth and fun.

I’m not too fond of the deck mechanic that the spell system uses, but only time will tell if that will be a deal breaker for me or not.

For everything else Magic: Legends, keep it here.
