Players can expect a few new surprises as Capcom recently showcased its next title in the beloved Resident Evil franchise.
What is Resident Evil Village?
Resident Evil Village is a direct sequel to 2017’s hit title Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (RE7).
Now, to understand what that really means, we need to take a look at RE7. RE7 was a new take on the series from a fundamental level. It was played in first person, was way more about scares and resource management than the previous three titles, and brought the scope back to a much smaller scale.
Resident Evil Village sets out to pick up where RE7 leaves off. We once again will be playing as Ethan Winters, who escaped the horrors of RE7 with Mia (now his wife). The two also have a child now, which will be playing some role in the narrative, as we see series fan-favorite, Chris Redfield, holding it in a cutscene.
Once again, players can expect a first-person viewpoint, but the focus does seem a bit different this time around. Based on the showcase, there is a much larger emphasis on combat here.
This new combat emphasis will be applied to an entirely new castle setting. There is a lot of mystery surrounding the setting and it’s new set of enemies, including the widely discussed vampires.
For series veterans, this seems like the step from Resident Evil 3 to Resident Evil 4, but from RE7 to Village.
What To Expect?
As stated above, players can expect a larger focus on combat, a whole new area to explore, and lots of jump scares, I’m sure. Check out the full showcase below.
I’m looking forward to it, as they showcased finding and upgrading weapons, in the same fashion we saw back in Resident Evil 4.
We know Ethan Winters AND Chris Redfield will be playing roles in this title. It is still unknown if Chris will be playable, or some type of unplayable antagonist.
Regardless, I think it’s best for players to maintain caution with this title, as Capcom’s team seemed very eager to show off preorder bonuses, and different game editions before showing any gameplay, and a portion of the gameplay they did show was spent on RE7, as well as a tacked-on free-to-start, multiplayer-only mode (they should really stop wasting dev times on these).
So, take that with a grain of salt, and keep in mind where Capcom’s mind is at with this title.
Release Date?
According to Capcom, Resident Evil Village will be releasing on May 7th, 2021 for Series X, PS5, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Currently, there is a PS5 exclusive demo that players can check out on the Playstation Store, and there is another demo set to release for all consoles coming soon.
