To start smelting and forging in Valheim, you will need to find surtling cores. It’s pretty much necessary to find them to progress, so when you’re starting out, it can be very frustrating if you can’t figure out how to get them.

Dungeons to Find Surtling Cores

Surtling cores are found in dungeons that are scattered throughout the woods in Valheim. Now I will be the first to say that my biggest gripe about dungeons is their low spawn rate, at least what appears to be a low spawn rate. I may be playing on a cursed seed and have not tested out multiple worlds yet, so take that with a grain of salt.

Dungeon entrances can either be above ground or below ground and can contain some good loot in them. They will also be crawling with skeletons that you will need to fight through, as well as the occasional ghost. You will want to be prepared before going dungeon crawling. I would suggest bringing a lot of food, full leather armor, weapon, and shield, as well as a bow.

Not every dungeon has a surtling core, and some dungeons can either have 1, or as many as 8, that we have seen at least.

Once you find a surtling core inside, it’s easy as grabbing them and going. You will need 5 to craft your first smelter and 10 if you want a smelter and kiln, so be prepared for a bit of a grind (or luck) to find at least 2 dungeons.

Troll Caves

You will also find troll caves scattered throughout the woods. They are small caves big enough to fight the troll in. Once defeated, the troll drops some materials, and there can be some chests that have some loot. Unfortunately, surtling core’s cannot be found in troll caves. At least not that I have seen.

Wrapping Up

Finding your first dungeon with some cores in it is super exciting. Once you get 5, you’re on your way to forging some fun new gear.
